The Future of Speedjunkie.ca is Yours

Postby deagle » Mon Sep 14, 2009 10:04 am

It's time for a change.
The software that runs the site is outdated and bloated.
The time to upgrade is overdue and fast approaching.

I'm thinking something along the lines of Joomla + phpBB3 + JomSocial.

I have some general ideas of the direction I want to go but would like to hear from you, the members that make the site what it is.

In addition to upgrading the technology that provides us our community, I want to build an official 'Leadership Team' (for lack of better term); a collection of people that are active on the forum and in the community (by active I don't necessarily mean high post numbers). We already have many of these people in place - you all know who you are - I just want to give them proper recognition and the tools to do more of what they do best. If you would like to be part of the team, please contact me.

So, what's next?

Let's discuss what we want Speedjunkie.ca to be.
Contact me if you think you belong on the Leadership Team (don't be shy)
I can speak French... in Russian.

You've created a terrific forum here Darryl, and I'm sure that
your ideas will only enhance the Speedjunkie.ca experience.

I fact I hold you personally responsible for my current financial condition. :P

I am a member on a couple of forums, but this is the only one I check daily. Great people, great site & fun.
Whatever decision is made will take the site to the next level and make it even better.

I think Joomla would be a pretty good choice. I'm not familiar with the other two. I'll have to check them out when I get a chance. I'd hate to see SJ go facebook like though. Friends of friends of friends, who I don't know and must get permission to meet, ect... Is this not a community?

Things I'd like to see...
- RSS feeds of posts (so I don't have to have the site open all the time at work to see what's new)
- Bike route maps plugin of sorts (I'd help write a plugin for it).
- Ride announcements, requests. Put them front and center - not just in a forum post.

Just to name a few. :)

Anything technical you need, PM me and I'll see if I can help.

While we're on the subject of making feature suggestions, I'd like to see the ability to read a Private Message directly from the email notification without needing to log into the site. I thought this feature was already available with phpbb, but I'm not 100%.

Joomla looks nice, but I have yet to install it myself so I can't comment on it more than that. I think I might install it though just for personal curiosity.

I'll help out anyway I can.

I'm pretty good with crayons too, we just need to keep them away from [you] because he likes to eat them

But seriously, I love the site as it is, I can not offer an opinion on the platforms but since it is in need of an upgrade I do like Heebz suggestions of bike route maps plugin and the RSS feeds.

I've worked with phpbb, and it has neat features as mentioned already. I've heard great things about Joomla, but have not tried it myself. I think its great you're putting it "out there" for the membership to weigh in before making the choice though Darryl.

i think rides posted along one side seperate would be a good idea then anyone who just wants to ride could ignore mindless banter, rants, general tomfoolery and shananigans

speaking of which check out a car parked on a gsxr
